Ideally, every child would grow up in a loving, caring household with parents or caregivers who meet their emotional needs. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always happen.
Many people understand both the immediate and long-term impacts physical abuse can have on a child. But emotional abuse—including neglect and even unmet needs—can be just as damaging. It can create a lasting impact that affects everything from how you see yourself to your relationships.
Have you ever wondered if you’re still suffering from childhood emotional neglect? It can affect everyone differently, but there are some signs to look out for. Let’s take a closer look at some of the common red flags and what you can do as an adult to break free from the emotional pain of your past.
Everyone has needs from the moment they’re born. Physical needs are typically more obvious. Children need food, shelter, clothing, etc. Emotional needs include safety, attachment, love, and even independence. If those emotional needs aren’t met in childhood, it’s considered emotional neglect.
There are a few ways in which emotional neglect can occur. The most obvious, of course, is simply ignoring a child’s emotional needs. However, it can also occur through humiliation, intimidation, or isolation. For example, if your caregivers made fun of you as a child or always made you feel as though there was something wrong with you, they were neglecting your emotional needs.

You might not remember being emotionally neglected as a child. It’s not uncommon to push those issues down or try to forget them so you can lead a relatively normal life. But even if you don’t exactly remember what happened, the effects remain in your mind and body and can manifest themselves through a variety of symptoms.
Difficulty identifying your emotions is often the biggest warning sign of childhood emotional neglect. If your emotions weren’t addressed as a child, you’re likely to have a harder time understanding them and regulating them now.
You might experience regular outbursts of frustration or anger. Another common manifestation is experiencing emotions that are disproportionate to the situation at hand. Other common signs of childhood emotional neglect include low self-esteem, difficulty feeling “seen” or valued, and trust issues.
It’s also likely that you’ll experience difficulties within your relationships. Many people dealing with the effects of emotional neglect have a hard time with emotional and physical intimacy. Their low self-esteem also often draws them to unhealthy relationships or codependency. Others choose to isolate or find themselves feeling lonely most of the time.
Anyone can experience childhood emotional neglect. However, there are some risk factors to consider. Children from disadvantaged groups, for example, might be more likely to experience this kind of neglect.
You might not always recognize the signs of childhood emotional neglect as an adult. But if you feel like something’s missing or you often feel hollow or “numb,” don’t try to push those feelings aside. Your emotions are trying to tell you something.
Working through the emotional neglect you suffered as a child isn’t an easy task, but it’s certainly not something you have to go through alone. The first step on your healing journey is to recognize there’s a problem and have a desire to overcome it. That often means getting back to the root of the issue and learning how to fight back from the ground up.
